Exhibition – Work and Inspiration

The exhibition contained contemporary braid and beadwork creations by local artist, author and mathematician, Jacqui Carey. You can see the works in the exhibition which inspired Jacqui.

A beadwork design

A beadwork design  made using Amazonian techniques, set on a framework of kumihimo.

Apron

Beaded Apron: Arawak peoples, Amazon. European glass beads threaded onto double-stranded weft of fine cotton, with fringes and ties of twisted thread. Made on a portable wooden frame with vertical warps of cotton or silk grass.

A continuous silk kumihimo braid

A continuous silk kumihimo braid coiled round and through hand-turned brass beads. This piece was influenced by the Hawaiian necklace with its coils of plaited human hair.

Neck Ornament (Lei Niho Palaoa): Hawian Islands

Neck Ornament (Lei Niho Palaoa): Hawian Islands. The pendant of ivory, either sperm-whale or walrus, is suspended from a necklace of finely plaited strands of human hair with olona fibre ties. It was worn by men amd women of chiefly rank.

A selection of silk kumihimo braids with beads

 added during the braiding process. A row of black onyx beads form the centre of the necklace. The ends are crocheted and fasten with an antique button.

Necklace(Achi Ala): North East India.

Multi-strand glass bead necklacewith a coin, dated 1917, as the fastener ('George V King Emperor', and his image on the obverse). The beads originate from either Italy or Czechoslovakia. Such necklaces are worn in hanks by men and women in most Naga tribes.

A quilt effect kumihimo braid

A quilt effect kumihimo braid with black onyx and gold-plated beads. The beads were added after the braid was completed.
