Donor Information

Kent Kingdon (1810-1889)

Approximately 70% of the oriental ceramic collection was donated by Kent Kingdon, a benefactor who played an influential role in assisting to establish the RAMM.  An upholsterer by trade, he was a man of exceptional taste with a talent for interior decoration.  He appears to have had a voracious appetite for collecting as noted by his sheer contribution to the Oriental ceramic collection alone.  Many of the Chinese pieces that he donated are of the genre of Qing porcelain decorated in overglaze enamels.

His contribution to the Japanese Collection cannot be overstated in that he donated all but seven of the pieces.  As documented in the report he did not confine his taste to one particular genre, which has ultimately benefited the RAMM by providing an eclectic collection, which has the potential to entice the viewer to sample what the world of Japanese porcelain has to offer.

Lady Lockyer

Lady Lockyer donated a considerable amount of export blue and white porcelain to the ceramic collection (all of the pieces starting with the accession number 50/1943/2).  Her contribution has provided the museum with an insight into true blue and white export porcelain made for a wealthy English home.
