How to Increase Awareness of the Collection

Proposals to Increase Awareness of the Burmese Collection

  • The James Henry Green Centre, Brighton, has expressed interest in exhibiting elements of the RAMM textile collection whilst the museum is closed during refurbishment. The James Henry Green Centre is at the forefront of Burmese Textile research in the U.K. The Bankfield Museum, Halifax is also keen to work with the RAMM textiles.

  • At present the foremost publication on Burmese textiles is ‘Textiles from Burma’. At the back of the book is a list of significant textile collections in the U.K. It is essential that the RAMM in mentioned in the next publication.

  • The fans in the RAMM collection are significant and need to be included in the next edition of ‘The Fan Directory of Great Britain’ Ed. Harley Preston. The Fan Museum in Greenwich was very accommodating and just requires the collection details.

  • The RAMM Asian Art Collection needs to be acknowledged in the Asian Art Week Catalogue, which corresponds with Asian Art week in London every November.

  • Get in contact with the British Burma Society and establish solid links. Inform them of the collection

  • Continue working with academics to promote a Burmese collection with up-to-date interpretation.

  • Inform relevant Asian Art/Ethnographic Institutions with links to Burma of significant elements of collection for instance SOAS, and Asia Art House, London, Denison University, U.S.A. and Boulton Collection Indiana U.S.A.

  • Work with Burmese communities in the southwest (Plymouth & Yeovil) to promote working relationship with collection.

  • When the museum is temporarily closed to the public (due to a forthcoming HLF-funded refurbishment 2008 – 2010) take elements of the collection to other parties, such as schools, and universities. Utilise potential of collection in Outreach.
