The Issues Case

Up until this year, the World Cultures gallery included a display that discussed the acquisition history of certain ethnographic items prior to them being donated to the Museum. It was a mixture of positive and negative stories but an accurate reflection of attitudes that existed in the colonial period of Britain's history. Perhaps some of these attitudes continue into the present day?

Many of these items are not going into storage but will be included in the larger Finders Keepers gallery where their stories will continue being told.

Finders Keepers focuses on the subject of collecting, the issues surrounding object acquisition and the stories behind some of our better known donors such as Bowring, Veitch and Vaughan (who presented the Museum with material from the voyages of Captain Cook). This particularly gallery also brings together items from the Antiquities, Art, Ethnography and Natural History collections. Finders Keepers will occupy the space of the former first floor art gallery, which is adjacent to World Cultures.
